Have you ever done this?
Have you ever heard someone say “listen, this story is really funny” only to find that you didn’t find it funny at all?
Laughter comes from surprise – if you announce that you’re going to be ‘funny’ the surprise is gone. And, funnily enough, some people will see this as a challenge not to laugh.
Humour is subjective – it’s up to individuals to decide whether they find it funny – so never make that announcement. If your audience don’t laugh you’ll be left feeling flatter than a steam-ironed squirrel.
Lead into those lovely anecdotes naturally and look for the truth and key point in each one. Remember… the ideal speech is one that weaves a key message in with the humour; you need to inform and entertain.
